Tourism Industry - Foremost Affected By Climate Change
In the next ten years or so, the tourism industry is going to double and its contribution to global warming is expected to jump as increasing numbers of people travel by air. The industry accounts for five percent of global emissions of heat trapping gases in the atmosphere. According to a UN agency report, global warming may extend the summers of northern countries like Canada, Britain and Russia and create new opportunities for travel in the polar regions. In poorer and island nations where the tourism industry is generating an economic output up to forty percent were seen jeopardized by worlds rising temperature and the result of environmental changes. Beach resort tourism and winter-summer sports as well already felt the effect of rising temperatures which will cause more hot days, strong winds, tropical storms, intense rainfall, drought and wildfires, the UN World Tourism Organization has reported.
Several coastal areas have noted beach erosions brought about by storms, more algae blooms and jelly fish infestations because of warmer than normal sea temperature. Mountain resorts have coped with less snow and shorter ski seasons. Areas allocated for scuba diving and snorkeling were also seen under threat from climate change.
Most of the coral reefs would be obliterated by just a mere increase of a three degree Celsius of sea temperature. Those colorful fishes and sea creatures would also disappear in due time if the rising of sea temperature cannot be stopped. It could threaten extinction up to thirty percent of marine life and different pant species. Notwithstanding, to mention safari Africa where a significant decrease on the number of lions, elephants and rhinoceros, affecting and hurting the safari operators.
Maldives an island south of subcontinent India, and whose economy is dependent heavily in tourism, could lose the entire islands with a small increase in sea levels while the urban sites in Europe like Venice and lower Manhattan could also be submerged to water. While the estimated potential losses the tourism industry was not clearly known. Unmitigated climate change can damage tourist sites, could cause severe job losses and economic dislocation. Changing weather patterns has underlined by would be traveler’s perceptions of the impact of global warming that is affecting in some particular areas would increasingly influence their choices.
Water shortages in popular warm weather resorts is imminent because this would effect strain resources shake by the local population or agriculture. Although the overall worldwide growth in tourism was unlikely to suffer much, it could lead to more tourism spending in temperate nations and less in warmer or tropical destinations that are presently popular the report has added.
