World number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia patiently breaks down Italian Potito Starace with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-1 win at the French Open.
Djokovic already holds the Wimbledon, US Open, Australian Open trophies and is looking forward to add the French Open he has never won to complete the sweep of the tennis major titles.
The 25 year old Serbian is aiming to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four major trophies.
Starace ranked 97th in the world, proved to be a stubborn opponent to Djokovic and held his serve throughout the opening set.
Djokovic could not take two set points in the 12th game of the opener but he won the tie-break easily enough and finally broke through in the fifth game of the second set.
From there he looked more like the player who has dominated the sport for 18 months, moving well and allowing a weary-looking Starace only two more games.
Djokovic will next face Blaz Kavcic after the Slovenian beat Lleyton Hewitt 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 6-3.
World number three Roger Federer won at Roland Garros in 2009 and was the runner-up last year to Rafael Nadal.
Federer of Switzerland began his French Open campaign with a straight-sets victory to book his place in the second round by beating unseeded German Tobias Kamke 6-2, 7-5, 6-3.
The Swiss had no problems in closing out the match with the German and his victory equals Jimmy Connors’ record of 233 Grand Slam match wins.
Federer, will be facing Romania’s Adrian Ungur in the second round who defeated former Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian of Argentina 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5.
Meanwhile, world number four Andy Murray of Britain and world number two Rafael Nadal of Spain will play their first round matches on Tuesday.
