A research from the University of Melbourne in Australia subjected 173 college students to test for problematic internet and gambling behaviors, around 5% of the students showed signs of gambling problems while 10% of the students posted as what considerably high enough to put them in the at risk category for internet ‘addiction’.
There’s an effect of what technology has brought to these students, it has taken away their time, with their other tasks, friends and family in the real sense.
It may be the convenience, or the immediacy of the internet that has brought to our lives that had pampered us not to go back to the basics of doing things the way they were.
It has slowly reshaping our personality and consciousness to a virtual world away from the world of reality. With the advent of high speed internet you become impatient to the realities around you.
Some experts believe that excessive use of internet, cellphones and other technological gadgets can cause us to become more impatient, impulsive, forgetful and even more vain.
Some studies have suggested that the excessive dependence of mobile phones and internet is similar to an “addiction” to drugs.
That most people neglect household work or any other important tasks to spend more time on the web.
The International Center for Media and The Public Agenda at the University of Maryland had asked 200 students to refrain from using electronic media for a day.
The overwhelming results had suggested that giving up technology suddenly and completely not only makes life logistically difficult but also changes our ability to connect to others.
As of this time, there is no easy way to conquer our dependence to the internet. However, there is still we can do to alleviate the situation, for sure we cannot avoid our activities online but we can limit them so as not to neglect our own equally important tasks and responsibilities in the real world.
