Staff at the Oberhausen Sea Life Center in Germany said in a statement that the controversial clairvoyant octopus has died.
They, the whole staff were saddened upon learning of octopus Paul’s death when they return to work last Tuesday.
“He appears to have pass away peacefully during the night, of natural causes, and we are consoled by the knowledge that he enjoyed a good life,” said the center’s manager, Stefan Porwoll.
Octopus Paul becomes sensational and an instant celebrity around the globe after making headlines when he precisely predicted how Germany would fare in her seven matches, after which the octopus was tested again of his psychic ability in the final championship matches between Netherlands and Spain.
After Germany’s semi final defeat, octopus Paul predicted Spain to beat the Netherlands in the final, which prompted one news agency to report he had spurred a jump in demand for Spanish government bonds. Paul’s prophecy duly came to pass and Spain has won the World Cup.
Following Spain winning the World Cup, the Spanish zoo made an acquisition bid for octopus Paul’s custody but his German Keepers would not allow to relinquish nor sell him to them.
The remains of psychic octopus shall be kept in cold storage until the center decides how to mark the mollusk’s extra ordinary life, Porwoll said.
“We may decide to give Paul his small burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine,” Porwoll added.
