World no. 2 Rafael Nadal, a six-time winner at Roland Garros, clinched a 6-2, 6-2, 6-0 win over Uzbekistan Denis Istomin and advances to the third round at the French Open.
The defending champion has only lost one service game in the tournament so far.
Istomin produced a dogged performance but Nadal, looking to win a record seventh title, was always in control, breaking twice on the way to wrapping up the first set.
But his relentless play on the way to moving 2-0 ahead appeared to break Istomin’s resolve and Nadal made light work of completing the win.
The Spaniard will now face Argentine Eduardo Schwank for a place in the last 16.
World no. 3 Roger Federer, the 2009 French Open champion, was in complete control against Romanian Ungur until midway through the third set.
World number 92 Ungur had two break points in the sixth game and then two set points at 5-4.
Federer saved them and then went 6-4 ahead in the tie-break that followed.
However, the 16-time Grand Slam winner’s immaculate timing briefly deserted him and a netted backhand gave Ungur a fourth successive point and the set.
Federer needed to save two break points in the opening game of the fourth set but soon closed out victory in two hours and 27 minutes.
British number one Andy Murray, the fourth seed, overcame a significant injury scare to reach the French Open third round with a gutsy victory over Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen.
Murray, who has been battling a back injury, came from behind to seal a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 win but admitted afterwards he came close to quitting.
Fifth seed Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also booked his place in the third round with a victory over German Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in four sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
